The Fuel Guide

Natural gas, propane, electric, or charcoal — how to choose before you buy.

THE LUXE GUIDE

Pick the fuel first. Everything else follows.

Fuel is the one decision that shapes every other choice in your outdoor kitchen — what you can install, where, and how it cooks. Get it right before you fall for a grill, and the rest of the build gets easier.

Natural Gas, Propane, Electric, Charcoal

  • Natural Gas (NG): never refill a tank, lowest running cost, but needs a gas line run to the spot. Best for permanent built-ins. Confirm you have or can add a line before buying an NG unit.
  • Propane (LP): goes anywhere, no plumbing, slightly higher fuel cost and you manage tanks. Best for flexibility, carts, and phased builds.
  • Electric: for spaces with no gas access — condos, balconies, covered areas with tight venting. Confirm the circuit can handle the load.
  • Charcoal / Kamado: flavor-first cooking, no fuel line, more hands-on. A specialty cooker, not usually the only one.

Most built-in kitchens run NG or LP. Always follow your product's manual and local code for gas type, line sizing, and clearances.

Which Fuel Is Right for You?

  • Permanent island, gas available? Natural gas — convenience and lowest long-term cost.
  • No gas line, or want flexibility? Propane — the most adaptable choice.
  • No gas at all / tight covered space? Electric, with the right circuit.
  • Chasing flavor as a second cooker? Add charcoal or a kamado alongside your primary grill.
