Small Patio Guide: Layouts, Clearances & Compact Appliances

Small Patio Guide

Short on space, big on taste. This guide shows how to design a compact outdoor kitchen that still cooks like a dream—under 10 feet run length.

Smart Layouts (Under 10 ft)

  • Straight 6–8 ft: grill or plancha + 24" prep + 30–36" storage combo.
  • L-mini (6 + 4 ft): hot zone on the long leg, fridge/sink on the short leg.
  • Cart + prep table: a premium grill cart plus a 48" stainless table and drawer.

Clearances & Safety (always follow brand manuals)

  • Keep 6"+ air gap before any combustible cladding near hot appliances.
  • Use insulated jackets for grills in non-masonry cutouts.
  • Add two island vents (opposite sides). Low for propane, high for natural gas.

Compact Components We Recommend

  • Flat-top/plancha or 26–32" grill for max cooking in minimal width.
  • Combo door + drawer for tools, fuel access, and paper towels.
  • Undercounter fridge (outdoor-rated) or a drop-in cooler if power is tight.

Checklist

  • Measure total run + walkway clearances (36–42").
  • Pick one primary cooker (grill or plancha) + one cold unit.
  • Add required venting and an insulated jacket as needed.
